Album Review: Heathers the Musical (Original West End Cast Recording)

Heathers the Musical is acclaimed for its music worldwide and many people know of it in some way. Many people have performed it all over and the music hits just right each time. The skill that went into making the music is high and it is not one to dismiss just for its popularity. The cast of one production of it released their version of the songs and did an amazing job in the recording of it

The album starts with “Beautiful,” which goes into many of the feelings that high schoolers (and even college students) may feel. That constant prayer for a better tomorrow, wanting to escape the pains of school is something many students may experience. There is this ask of “Why?” in the song and it is something many students can relate to when not knowing why something is the way it is. This song is the perfect representation if you are looking for a song you can relate to. There is also this perfect mix of acting and singing, which creates an exaggeration often found in a musical. Give this song a listen if you need something to relate to.

Another song that is arguably known the most from the musical is “Candy Store,” which can be heard often in a room of theatre kids. This song is about Veronica joining the Heathers and worrying about being seen exactly like them, an experience that some can relate to when they fall into a bad crowd. Give this one a listen if you are looking for a catchy tune because this one will stick in your mind.

“Freeze Your Brain” is another song that some people can relate to. It is all about being someone that moved around so much as a kid, not ever getting close to others. Some people may relate to that experience for various reasons, but it can be common. The anxiety heard in the character singing is evident here, which can be heartbreaking but can also be a feeling many other people experience. This song does provide some comedy with the obvious advertisement of 7/11’s, which can be even more humorous when watching the musical. This song is one to listen to if you can relate to the themes mentioned, as it can help show you are not alone.

This album and the musical as a whole are something to listen to if you get a chance. There is a lot to this album that is better portrayed when the musical is watched. There are dark themes throughout the album, but there is often a catchy tune that you can find and many themes that can be relatable. Make sure to watch the musical version of it if you want to experience the album in its full glory.
