The celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. in Aiken
We celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. every year as a day of service because he lived a legacy of civil rights advocacy.
Each year, on the third Monday of January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday that people all over America dedicated to serving their own people.
This year Aiken Technical College (ATC) and the University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) are coming together for a community event to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 24 at 3:00 p.m. This event will be held online on the Facebook and Youtube pages’ of each prospective college. Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, Benedict College President, will speak on a quote of Dr. King’s.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister who used civil disobedience to end racial segregation. His first big move was during a bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, with help from the Black community.
He was instrumental in passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which banned discrimination in public places. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace before he was killed on April 4, 1968.
