Column: Too much protection or not enough?
If you think the grill of your car needs to wear a face mask when out of the garage, you may be going a bit too far and if you are protesting the state ordered restrictions without a mask in large tightly packed groups, you might not be doing enough.
Many students who routinely travel the Aiken Augusta Highway south of campus are familiar with an old SUV that was on the side of the road with a for sale sign on it for a couple of years, and then was purchased for use as a billboard on the same spot.
As a fan of creative marketing, I admire when someone tries to make an eyesore into an icon. They probably don’t feel their auto turned billboard is at risk of contracting or spreading the disease but are trying to remind folks driving by, that wearing a mask while out and about is a good thing to keep in mind to keep safe and to keep others safe as well.
Counter this local effort with displays of stupid in Minnesota, Michigan, and Virginia, home to democratic governors, where protesters of the stay at home orders, ignored all steps considered “safe,” and marched in the streets.
They’re supported in their efforts with tweets from President Trump this past Friday. CBS News reported the Trump Campaign is already planning to restart rallies without any consideration of what is considered safe.
Whatever happens, I believe the followers should follow the leaders, but it appears nationwide, there is a lack of leadership.
