Have You Met Jesse Owens?

Hailing from Alabama, Jesse Owens used his platform in track and field to fight for civil rights.

Owens’ early years were noted by poverty. He was forced to take a variety of jobs like delivering goods and working in a shoe repair store. It wasn't until he developed his passion for running and athletics that his life began to change. However, just because his world was changing did not mean the world around him was. He continuously faced serration and discrimination, even in college while traveling with his team.

Nonetheless, he remained graceful and dignified all the way. His greatest moment came during the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he won four gold metals. During the Civil Rights movement Owens used his platform and acted a goodwill ambassador, speaking to large corporations and the Olympic movement. Owens died in 1980.
