Have You Met Hiram Rhodes Revels?

Born in 1827 North Carolina, Hiram R. Revels was a free man all his life. During a time when education for black children was illegal, he attended a school taught by a free black woman. To complete his education, Revels moved north in 1844 and attended Beech Grove Quaker Seminary in Liberty, Indiana, and the Darke County Seminary. His father was a preacher and Revels followed in his footsteps when he was ordained in 1845.

During the Civil War, Revels worked as chaplain and recruiter for two black regiments in the Union. After the war, he took up the duty of educating his people and getting them involved. He reluctantly entered into politics but was well-liked by whites and blacks. Revels made history in 1870 by being the first African American to serve in the US Congress.

Editor’s Note: Throughout the month of February, Pacer Times will help celebrate Black History Month by introducing important black activists, inventors, scientists, artists and other leaders from history. Look out for new articles like this every day this month.
