Have You Met Octavia Butler?

California born in 1947, Octavia Butler was raised by her mother and grandmother after her father’s passing. She was a dedicated reader and began writing at age 10. Despite her learning disability, dyslexia, and extreme shyness, she continued to work hard.

She became a writer and broke new ground in science fiction. Because that genre was traditionally written by white males, Butler’s representation was meaningful. Her novels were given high praise and were eventually translated into multiple languages. They sold over 1 million copies. Throughout the course of her career she won several awards, including the MacArthur fellowship (being the first science fiction writer to win the award).
