Have You Met Angela Davis?

A writer, activist and scholar, Angela Davis advocated for oppressed people. She fought for gender equity, prison reform and alliances across racial lines.

She was born on January 26, 1944. She experienced racism and prejudice firsthand as a child. The neighborhood where she lived was nicknamed “Dynamite Hill” because of the frequent home bombings in the area by the Ku Klux Klan. Through it all she persevered.

Davis studied philosophy at the University of Massachusetts. After being involved with a botched escape attempt in 1970, Davis was brought up on several charges, including murder. She only served 18 months before she was acquitted.

Now into her 70s, Davis continues to lecture and travel advocating for issues such as the criminal justice system, women’s rights, and race.
