Meet the SaVAGents, upcoming R&B group

On September 19, I had the pleasure of watching the performance of an up and coming new group called the SaVAGents. I would highly recommend finding the time to attend their next performance. The group’s music style was reminiscent of old school R&B but with an edge. Their show was entertaining to watch as well as soothing to listen to because it was familiar yet different. Rod Lorick, one of the five members said, “We have variety going on that a lot of people don’t do. We have a mixture of singing, dancing, acting, and improve, so we’re something fresh.” Other members Deon Generette, Corey Jon-Nowell, Darian Hill, and Will Young share the same sentiments.

The majority of the group met in 2013 through acting with WOW (Walking on Water) Productions. When asked how the group started, Hill recalled their origin story fondly. “I know personally, I was singing in a group back in the day.  And I used to always tease him [Deon] with the idea. We all acted together really. I knew him [Deon] in college but the rest of us really met through the acting,” said Hill, “ A year later after the initial question. Corey said, ‘Hey look do y’all remember the question I asked about the group thing…let’s make something happen.’ And I think all for us initially when we first came into it we didn’t really know what we were doing, but it popped off. And here we are, the SaVAGents.”

Throughout the show, the group performed together but also separately. Each member got a chance to show their personality and display their individual, unique voices. When asked what they bring to the group, Jon-Nowell said, “I am the glue. I am the mastermind. I am the calm in all this storm. Honestly, I think I bring a little human to the group.” Generette said, “I bring the edge and the rawness of the SaVAGents.

So what exactly is a SaVAGent? As said by Young, “The meaning of SaVAGents is a mannerable guy who can romance a beauty and tame her beast.” With such enthusiasm and passion for what they do, this group is bound to be successful. Jon-Nowell said, “I think that we’re going to be our own trailblazers for our own way” and trailblazing is what they are doing. The SaVAGents are in the process of coming out with original music and producing their next album while still touring and performing.

This group will do great things, and I’m excited that I had the opportunity to witness their journey from the start.
