Organization of the Week: NAACP

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909 with the intention of removing racial barriers and fighting for racial equality.  

This organization has been active at the university for over a decade and is known for providing community service opportunities as well as a safe space for students to discuss important issues involving race relations. 

Breanna Kennedy is the vice president of the USC Aiken NAACP branch.

“I learned that from we all come together to advocate and educate about the triumphs and hardships that marginalized communities go through, change happens; and we are continuously building a community here on campus.” Kennedy sharing what she’s learned from being involved in NAACP.

She has played an active role within the organization since becoming involved and was described to be a vital member.

“My favorite thing about being a part of NAACP is having open discussions during our general meetings where we talk about recent events, issues within marginalized communities, or just issues happening around campus. Having these open discussions not only creates a safe space for us to talk but also allows us to come up with events/posts shedding light on the issues.” -Kennedy’s favorite aspect about the organization
