YOU Season 4 Review
Spoilers ahead!
Joe Goldberg is back again with his usual antics of obsession, stalking and murder. The past three seasons showed Joe’s obsession with various women; Beck, Love and Marienne.
Each season took place in different parts of the US and has had multiple different characters.
Season 4 takes place in London and Joe’s new alias this season is Jonathan Moore under the guise of an English professor.
Surprisingly most of this season did not have Joe obsessing over a specific woman, minus the occasional thoughts of Marianne. Instead, Joe is being stalked! This is a refreshing twist of events because the past three seasons had fallen into a bit of a pattern. Throughout this season Joe spent all of his time obsessing over who his stalker was while trying to protect the awful and elitist people he surrounded himself with.
The killer in this season was labeled the “Eat the Rich Killer” because the main target was the despicable elite that plagued London.
Throughout the season it seemed that Joe had truly grown and was trying his best to break his murderous pattern. A lot of murders happened around him, but he became the detective trying to crack the case of the murderer this season.
He finally learned that Rhys was the killer and did everything in his power to take him down.
The major plot twist of this season was that Joe was the killer all along! He had another personality or “dark side” that would take over and he could not remember anything when this would happen. They often referenced Dr. Jekyll and Hyde when this twist happened to show what Joe was going through.
Rhys was real, but all of Joe’s interactions with him were completely made up because his dark side had created a deep infatuation with the man.
Joe soon realized that he is at fault for trapping Marienne and began making a plan to save her, but she ended up dying from an allergic reaction.
The next big plot twist is that Marienne’s death was faked and all a plot to escape Joe!
While tying up loose ends, Joe kills a college student and then frames another one. This was extremely out of character for Joe because he always wanted to protect the youth. This shows that he is potentially going to be embracing even more of his dark and sinister side next season.
Overall, this season was amazing! There have been a lot of mixed views stating that it felt different and was boring at first, which I can understand. But overall, the story was great and the show took a risky choice to change things up. I honestly think it worked for the better!
Joe now has multiple people who know his secret, so he is expected to finally see justice in the next season.
Netflix has renewed YOU for season five and has stated that this will be the final season! I’m happy that they are going to end the show next season because this will tie everything up and keep the show from ruining itself by running for too long.
Overall, I’d give this season ⅘ stars. The storyline was entertaining and different from what the show typically does.
