A Visit to Cafe Beignet
Last week I took a trip to New Orleans and had a chance to stop by Cafe Beignet on Canal Street.
I got there around 7:20 and hung around the entrance until it opened, which was only a ten minute wait. This ended up being the best choice when I walked past it a few hours later with a huge line pouring out of it.
Already having a decent sized crowd, I was the tenth person in line, though it didn’t take long to reach the front. I did have time to look through the menu thankfully, so I didn’t embarrass myself at the cash register.
The attendant was polite and to the point. I ordered the breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg, and cheese) on a bagel, an iced latte, and three beignets. I got a number, 28, and my receipt. Around 12 dollars in total. One of the other workers told me to wait around the counter for my latte. I did, and it only took a minute or so for it to arrive.
Coffee in hand, I picked a heart-shaped seat on the other side of the café. There was a piano that played on its own, and it was a little too loud for my tastes. The old-timey music was a nice touch to its retro aesthetic.
Another short wait, and my food arrived. The sandwich was a lot bigger than I expected, which wasn’t a bad thing. Whenever I order breakfast elsewhere, it’s usually way tinier, despite the price being the same.
The bagel was toasted, and the rest of the food was warm, not too hot. The cheese melted perfectly, the bacon wasn’t too salty, and the egg wasn’t too runny. I scarfed it all down in record time.
The beignets were the best part. Paired with the latte, they were light, fluffy, and sweet. I couldn’t eat them all, but two out of three isn’t too bad. The powdered sugar got on my pants, but that was my only real complaint.
I had a lovely time here, and if I ever come to New Orleans again, I definitely will stop by.
