How to Make Sushi
Eating sushi is fun and tasty, but even cheaper options like veggie rolls are often expensive for the amount of food they contain. Fortunately, sushi can easily and cheaply be made at home. To follow this tutorial, you will need a sushi mat, but if you want to try making sushi without having to purchase a mat, you can find tutorials on making temaki—hand rolled sushi—online easily. This recipe is delicious and versatile, as you can use whatever ingredients you want as fillings. Because you can fill the rolls with whatever you want, making sushi is be a great way to use up leftovers.
Ingredients:
Rice
Nori sheets
Fillings
Optional:
Rice vinegar
White sugar
If using optional rice vinegar and white sugar, add a small amount when making rice. To begin making sushi, cook rice then chill it in the refrigerator to use later. While the rice is chilling, prepare your fillings by cutting them into thin slices. For fillings, you can use whatever you want. If you want to use fish in your sushi, I recommend using imitation crab or smoked salmon, as they come precooked and are far cheaper and easier to prepare than raw fish would be.
Once the rice is cooled, prepare your sushi rolling station by laying out all of your ingredients, your mat and a bowl of either oil or water to prevent the rice from sticking to your hand. Lay a sheet of nori rough side up on your sushi mat. Dip your hands in the bowl of water or oil, then spread rice across the nori, leaving the far end uncovered. Next, lay the fillings out in horizontal rows in the middle of the rice. When you are ready to roll up the sushi, grab the front of the mat and roll it—along with the rice covered nori—over the fillings, sealing them in. Press firmly to form a tight roll, then unroll the mat, leaving the partially rolled sushi. Wet the uncovered end of the sushi so the nori will stick to itself and finish rolling the sushi. After rolling, take a wet knife and gently cut the sushi into pieces. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi and enjoy!
