Aiken leaders seek to improve city, adopts AECOM action plan
With the goal to improve the city of Aiken, the City Council adopted the AECOM (architecture, engineering, construction, operations, and management) Strategic Economic Development Action plan March 22.
AECOM is “the world’s premier infrastructure consulting firm,” an international firm that develops projects concerning “transportation, buildings, water, governments, energy and the environment,” according to their website.
The approval of the plan is to continue the study of future project proposals based on “the broad set of goals” established in the plan, City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh said in a document within the City Council agenda.
The plan lists several topics like improving the Hotel Aiken site; the study would be conducted to confirm an optimal development plan for the hotel building and parcel.
The implementation strategy would also include considering residential on the upper floors of the hotels, parking on adjacent sites as part of any new construction, and including bars, restaurants and entertainment as part of the development.
The project also includes examining the development potential of the old Aiken Hospital site with the goal of enhancing the west entrance of Aiken with potential townhomes.
