USC Columbia professor removed from campus and teaching duties following student protests

In both 2018 and 2020, U of SC professor David Voros was accused of sexual harassment. Three different accusations arose, one from a former student and two from faculty members. The student settled for $75,000, but two civil lawsuits still remain.

Despite many efforts by students and faculty to have Voros fired, he initially was allowed to be teaching online classes in the spring semester. On top of that, he will be receiving around a 13% raise, bringing his salary from $81,681 to $91,923.

As of October 13, Voros’ online classes were cancelled amidst protesting by the student body.

It is unclear as to whether or not this raise is still in effect following the swift abrupt decision to remove Voros from campus and teaching entirely.

Voros was planned to teach three classes online in the spring since he is barred from returning to campus. However, the raise and the fact that he is still employed have students heated.

A group of students formed the Coalition to Fire David Voros in December 2020, and have been petitioning to have Voros fired.

Along with that, on October 14, hundreds of students protested on campus in an attempt to get U of SC to fire all faculty members accused of sexual harassment.

Currently there is a petition to fire David Voros that can be signed on the Action Network. At this time there are just over half of the signatures needed to fulfill the goal of 6,400 (The petition is here).
