Caution on the performing arts front

COVID-19 has triggered the development of protocols to mitigate the spread of the virus, including higher risk departments such as the performing arts.

Studies have been done to determine the extent of aerosol germs spread through played instruments as well as singing.

At USC Aiken, instrumentalists and vocalists are taking precautions with the coming performance season.

Both ensembles will be split into much smaller groups, ranging from 8-12 members maximum to allow for the 6-10 ft spacing between each individual. Each performer will be required to have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a face mask, instrument covers and face shields. 

During each rehearsal, 20 minutes will be allotted in order to recirculate the air throughout the practice space.

Each student will also be required to fill out a questionnaire and pass a temperature check before entering the rehearsal space each practice.

Surfaces such as music stands will be sanitized between each musical selection, and promptly after rehearsals.

Both the wind ensemble and choral performances this year will not be seen by an in-person audience, instead, performances will be recorded in an effort to limit the possibility of the virus being spread.
