Dorm cleaning 101

Moving into a dorm can be a stressful process, even more so when you need to COVID-19 clean the entire room before decorating. 

Note: Do not mix chemicals, this can be very dangerous and harmful to you and everyone in your dorm. Read all cleaning product instructions.

Some of the cleaning supplies I used are as follows: Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, dust rags, diluted bleach and Drano (for the shower pipes…yikes). My room also had evidence of water damage and felt moist, so I decided to also use DampRid in order to lessen the amount of water in the air. 

For high contact areas such as my desk, bed frame, door handles, light switches and so on, I used wipes. I would also recommend a disinfecting spray.

To clean out the tub, I made an 80-20 ratio of water to bleach to get rid of the residue and dirt (that was left there). Try not to use your bare hands when working with bleach, dish-washing gloves work well and can be reused.  

My tub took a while to fully empty, so I used Drano to clean out drain. ( Note: when using Drano, do not use it on the sink pipes. It will melt through them, and you will be sad.) 

I used the dust rags to clean the cobwebs off of the ceiling as well as the baseboards and dirty windowsills.

The room I am in had a weird smell, so I used Febreze for fabrics and sprayed it all over the carpet. It helped with the odor. If you are feeling up to it and have a vacuum, there are sprays that are specific to carpet cleaning and can help with funky smells.

After all the cleaning was finally done, I was able to easily decorate my room and make it my own.
