Weekly Briefing: Rest in peace, Professor Collins

Weekly Briefing: Rest in peace, Professor Collins

It’s Monday, Pacers, which means that there is a new issue of Pacer Times out and ready for your perusal.

While preparing our planned articles, we wrote an obituary last night about USC Aiken’s beloved former English professor, Vicki Collins, who passed away early Sunday morning.

Our condolences go out to all who have felt the sting of her loss. She was a dedicated professor, who was revered by students, faculty and staff alike.

Especially as this is not the only loss suffered by our campus as of late, please remember that the USCA Counseling Center is free and available to students.

This versatile issue includes articles by several staff members and covers a variety of topics, meaning that there is something to match just about every student’s interests.

In News, Editor Noelle Kriegel explained Title IX and how it can help students who have been affected by gender discrimination or sexual assault.

In the Arts and Entertainment section, Editor Erica Bennett wrote a long-awaited feature story on arts department chair, Dr. Joel Scraper.

Opinions Editor David Frantz wrote about the visiting stand-up comic who performed on campus last week, along with the dramatic reading of “For Bo” on the Etherredge Center mainstage. “For Bo” was also covered by Business Manager Cole Maddox, who offered his personal perspective on the issue of police brutality.

In the Lifestyle section, Reporter Chi Nguyen started a new series explaining the different astrological signs. This week’s crash-course is about Pisces. She also wrote an article about the dangers of identity theft.

In the opinions section, Editor Frantz wrote about the anti-talent show that never happened and his perspective as a first-time viewer of the annual Battle of Aiken.

Editors Kriegel and Bennett gave reverse perspectives on switching your major and minor. Reporter Angel-Hope Watts also wrote about her experiences as a queer and disabled person in the workforce.

That’s it for this week, Pacers. Have a great week and good luck with studying for your upcoming midterms.
