Our Fall Fest, Oct. 26-30, campus activities offered a creative variety of on-campus diversions and some were more soul-satisfying than others, especially last Wednesday’s Pie a Pacer event featuring Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Ahmed Samaha.
This, “It’s spooky to be hungry” event along with several more are part of a nationwide program to generate funds for the United Way.
For $1, students were encouraged to, legally, physically assault USCA staff members with freshly squirted whipped cream in a pie pan and many participated with absolutely no chagrin.
According to the unitedway.org website, the money raised for the “United Way advances the common good in communities across the world. Our focus is on education, income and health the building blocks for a good quality of life.”
In my on-again-off-again employment for companies, not my own, I was often encouraged to participate in donating to the United Way with what I would consider high-pressure tactics.
Although having no fondness for the tactics, I appreciate the concept of voluntarily contributing to help the less fortunate and consider these campus event-related fundraisers very valuable as an orientation for my fellow students arriving at their high paying jobs upon graduation.

Juyn Wiley, a sophomore business major, also happily took abuse for the cause.
