Black History Month Gala rewards USC Aiken students

The Office of Diversity Initiatives hosted their 2nd Annual Black Gala, themed “Our Ancestors Wildest Dream.”

Invited student organizations were required to be formally attired as the Sac Mezz was decorated and themed for the special event.

Nominated students, faculty and organization members filled the space, and dined on catered food as they congregated before the ceremony began.

The first award of the night was the Student Champion Award. This award was given to student Allan Smalls Jr. for his delegations surrounding the alternative homecoming events, orchestrated for ultimate inclusion and recreation for students during the Homecoming Week.

The second award of the night was the Organization Champion Award. Again, Smalls was recognized for his efforts and announced the winner. Another student, Imani Wedderburn, accepted the award alongside Smalls for her assistance and participation in the week’s planning. Ultimately, Smalls being the head of the unofficial committee was proven to be appreciated and admirable.

“We came up with events for students to enjoy themselves for 5 to 6 days,” said Wedderburn. She also mentioned that everyone that came out and supported, whether it was food, money or time, are to be thanked as well.

The third award was given to a faculty member.
