Should ICE Credits Be Mandatory?
USC Aiken is one of the few college campuses that still requires students to attend mandatory events to graduate. As students, we have to complete 16 ice events before we are allowed to graduate.
Although ICE events make sense to have more student engagement on campus, I think requiring them for graduation is unnecessary. If a student finishes all of their classes with exceptional grades but does not have all of their ICE events they will not be able to graduate.
This is a frustrating concept, especially for commuters and students that have to work jobs off campus. As a commuter that works a part-time job and has to pay bills, I am only on campus when it is required for me to be there. Many of the ICE events occur during my class times or at nights I usually work. Missing out on a night of work is missing out on money to pay bills.
The campus should honestly consider getting rid of ICE credits or at least cutting the number in half. If they implemented eight ICE events, a student would only have to attend two events a semester instead of four a semester.
