Dorm Dash: How to Make Pickles
Almost anything can be pickled, and the process is easier than one might expect! The process is a little time-consuming, but not too many tools are needed!
Here are the ingredients and tools you will need:
Mason Jars
A pot
A microwave or stove
Vegetables of your choice (cucumbers, okra, onions, jalapenos, radishes, etc.)
Dill (if you are making dill pickles)
Coriander
Mustard Seed
Celery Seed
Pepper Corns
Garlic
Salt
Sugar
White Vinegar
The Steps:
Make sure your mason jars are clean! It is recommended to sanitize them by boiling the jars for ten minutes but it is not necessary since these are not being jarred to be shelf stable.
Prep your vegetables. Clean and cut up whatever vegetables you plan on pickling.
Make the pickling brine (this recipe is for one jar, so multiply as needed):
Measure 1 cup of water
Measure 3/4 cup of vinegar
Combine them in a large pot or microwave-safe dish.
Add in a tablespoon of sugar (this will not make your pickles sweet!).
Add in a few pinches of salt.
Add in a few shakes of celery seeds, peppercorns, mustard seeds and coriander.
Heat up your brine and stir until the sugar and salt dissolve.
Put your vegetables of choice into the mason jars. You can have fun with this and make mixtures of different vegetables or do just one type of vegetable.
Then add in 2-3 garlic cloves and dill (if you are making dill pickles)
Pour the brine over the vegetables but make sure to leave a little bit of space at the top of the jar!
Then place the lids on loosely and allow the jars to cool down on the counter.
Once fully cooled down tighten the lids and place them in the fridge.
Wait about three days and then enjoy!
