Tv Show Review: Gen V
Spoiler warning: Slight spoilers ahead for episodes one through six of season one of “Gen V”.
“Gen V” takes place after the events of season three of “The Boys” with a few appearances and mentions of characters within the original show.
The spin-off show of the “The Boys” follows Marie Moreau as she starts at Godolkin University a school for superheroes to train and become a hero. While at Godolkin, Marie meets the school’s top-ranked hero Luke Riordan and his friend group as a university conspiracy unfolds.
The university conspiracy begins to unravel when Luke, the golden boy of the school, kills a professor and attacks Marie before ending his own life. Marie and his mourning friends discover their school has a secret prison for superheroes called The Woods where powered individuals are experimented on and held captive.
Similar to “The Boys”, the characters of “Gen V” have heartbreaking backstories filled with trauma and gore. Marie was a late bloomer, and her power didn’t manifest until she began puberty. Her abilities allow her to manipulate blood and the first time she menstruated she accidentally killed her parents.
Due to the incident, her younger sister no longer wants to be involved in Marie’s life or have any kind of contact with her. Separated in the foster care system, Marie went to a home for powered children and dreamed of becoming a hero to prove to her sister that she was not evil.
Marie’s character is bold, determined and blunt. She looks out for herself because that’s what she’s had to do for years but slowly begins to look out for her group trying to unravel the university conspiracy.
“Gen V” encompasses all the elements of gore, dark humor and trauma that exist in “The Boys” universe. The only difference is the characters in the spin-off are nicer and more diverse than those in the original series. They’re also younger, which makes the show feel more youthful and realistic to people apart of GenZ.
If you’re a fan of “The Boys”, I’d recommend watching “Gen V”. Just like the original series, you will be disgusted, excited and saddened by the characters and plot.
