Album Review: Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers
Continuing in the celebration of Women’s History Month, this week’s album review takes a look at a more recent and different record than the last.
“Punisher” is the second studio album by California-born and raised, indie singer and songwriter Phoebe Bridgers. Bridgers rose to fame after her 2017 debut album “Stranger in the Alps,” which firmly established herself in the indie rock and emo-folk scene.
“Punisher” follows the melancholic side of Bridgers, and features themes such as the sadness of endings and the numbness of disassociating. Tracks like “I Know the End” and the title track “Punisher” perfectly articulate the feelings that come with having to move forward even when you don’t want to.
Bridgers is a fantastic example of the success an independent female musician can have in today’s times, which the same, frustratingly, cannot be said about the rest of music history.
Bridgers is the kind of musician that makes art that everyone can relate to on a certain level, and she makes music that makes you appreciate the lyrics she sings as well as the music she is making.
The entire album has a run time of 40:37 and is a great listen if you feel like you’re alone in a similar situation.
Take the time to explore Bridgers’ discography, and check out some of her other projects like the bands “boygenius” and “Better Oblivion Community Center” which are both groups that she is a part of.
