Poems with Anab: Femininity Explored in Poetry - Part 3

As we near the end of Women’s History month, I wanted to present some poems written by another powerful female poet, Nikita Gill. Gill has published over six volumes of poetry, as well as garnering an immense social media following on multiple platforms.

Her works often discuss the role of social media and how poetry can be influenced or manipulated by it. Her voice can be a mouthpiece for young women looking to find their power, as in her poems.

“Never ever mistake her silence for weakness.
Remember that sometimes the air stills,
before the onset of a hurricane..”
— Her Silence
Nikita Gill

“Woman.

You are a thousand stories long,
with the depth of the ocean
and an entire constellation
woven into your soul.

And you must remember this
before any man
tries to convince you
that you are any less.”
— A Thousand Stories Long
Nikita Gill

“Girl,
you were born with a fire inside you,
and this world is determined to stamp it out.

You will see it when you stand up for yourself
and you are told
‘It isn’t ladylike to raise your voice.‘

You will hear it when you wear something that hugs your body
and feel the uncomfortable sensation of being stripped naked
by the eyes of men who call you names you are still too young to understand.

You will know it when a man tries to use his strength
to have his way with you the first time,
and you will need to use your fists/teeth/legs to get him off.

You will understand it when you see
your mother’s eyes filled with terror
because you are an hour later than you said you will be home.

But you must never ever let them take
those flames from within your soul,
Instead, you must burn brighter than ever
because you are a Daughter of the Sun,
And you belong only to yourself, not to this world.”
— For Girls Filled With Fire
Nikita Gill

“Defined by no man, you are your own story,
blazing through the world, turning history into history.

And when they dare to tell you about
all the things you cannot be,
you smile and tell them,
”I am both war and woman and you cannot stop me.””
— An Ode to Fearless Woman
Nikita Gill

”Listen to me, girl,
you have castles inside your bones,
coronets in your heart,
if he threatens you with battle,
you raise him a whole war,
the last time I checked,
Queens cower before no man.”
— Queens II
