Finding normalcy in a pandemic: Starting the semester right
With a new semester and new year comes a great opportunity to start with a clean academic slate. Though I think our break was too short, we did have a little time to recuperate, rest, Zoom call family and get ready for this Spring semester.
Even if you aren’t fully adjusted yet, here are a couple of tips when getting back into the new school semester.
Don’t buy the book yet. I know on the first couple classes you will want to be prepared with a book, pencil and notebook at the ready, but for some classes that say “required text,” actually don’t mean it. Wait until you have had one or two classes to determine if a trip to the bookstore is really worth it. (NOTE: Some classes absolutely need the book, ask your peers who have taken this class before you for advice.)
Get a planner. Even if it’s just for the small things, a homework assignment here, an exam there, it will just help you keep track of what is coming and if something changes you can always know what’s going on.
Print the syllabus. I know you can always look it up on Blackboard, but with a hard copy you can cut out the middle man. Also, it is easier to keep track of deadlines.
Get to know your classmates. If you know you’re a slow note-taker, and you see someone with better notes, get to know them. This could also lead you into a potential study buddy.
Know your resources. The librarians, help desk and professors here want to see you be successful. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
