TikTok vs. President Trump, the background
TikTok, a social media video app, has become popular among social media users of all ages. However, it has gained quite the backlash from government figures, including President Donald Trump, who threatened to ban the platform.
Other governments across the world have also considered this action.
Trump signed an executive order on Aug. 6 that may require Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores.
This decision was made due to evidence of China’s government gathering both citizen’s and foreign user’s data. TikTok’s creators responded with a statement that all data is kept in the United States with backup servers in Singapore, not China.
The link between the United States and China’s dispute originated in July. The United States Justice Department accused Chinese hackers of stealing COVID-19 vaccine data as well as American technology.
The New York Times labeled this as “The Cold War Between China and U.S”.
Though Trump gave a deadline of 45 days before a ban is in effect, TikTok’s United States General Manager Vanessa Pappas, responded that “TikTok will remain the U.S. We are here for a long run … Continue to share your voice here and let us stand for TikTok.”
