Black History Month celebrations continue with Juneteenth event

Juneteenth, a word derived from the combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” is a holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

The “Juneteenth USCA” Celebration Event, hosted by Diversity Initiatives, was held Monday, Feb 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the SAC lobby and gym. The event showcased many diverse organizations on campus and included snacks, a live dance performance and basketball.

A few of the organizations involved were RISE, PUB, NAACP, CURLS, the ALL STAR Dance Team and UNITY. The event began with a tour of the organizations inside the SAC Lobby. 

Students were able to learn about each organization and had the opportunity to gain prizes from tables. 

Student Body President Q’Ladrin Qouters attened the event and discussed the organization RISE. 

“RISE is a Christian-based worship organization for those who might not have a worship home,” Qourters said.

After visiting the different organizations, it was time for the performance done by the NPHC sororities and fraternities. The purpose of this performance was to celebrate the breakage away from the bondage of slavery, which is a large part of the celebration for not only the Greek Life but also the holiday. 

The event closed with intramural basketball and an Instagram t-shirt competition by Diversity Initiatives.
