Column: Things you and I should be thankful for
The United States is still celebrating Thanksgiving, despite the pandemic and millions of Americans unemployed. At the end of the day, there is always something to be thankful for.
The first Thanksgiving goes back to November 1621, when William Bradford invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit to celebrate the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest.
In 2020, some Americans are celebrating Thanksgiving virtually due to COVID-19. This year Americans have been through a lot, but Americans are still celebrating Thanksgiving because of the following reasons:
The pandemic is one of the first reasons to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The pandemic has indeed caused millions to lose their jobs, big plans being canceled or losing a family and friends because of COVID-19.
But, for some Americans, this is a break that they never had a chance to take. Parents who work more than two jobs get to finally stay home with their kids, spending valuable time with their children.
Family or loved ones avoiding catching the coronavirus is another reason why I am thankful for this year. Having elderly family members during a pandemic can be stressful.
With social distancing, schools, meetings and classes are being held via Zoom. This is something to be thankful for, it is just amazing living through the pandemic compared to 50 years ago.
Netflix, YouTube, and HULU: these apps are very convenient during stay home orders, they helps kill time and are entertaining.
Health, everyone suffers from small health issues. But the honest truth is that being healthy during the pandemic is something to be thankful for.
Water and food: Many Americans take these two things for granted and forget that right down the street there is a human being who is starving to death.
Pets: Sometimes it is hard to explain what you are feeling to friends or family members. Pets are a great company to have during those times.
The roof over my head: Living during the pandemic and still have a place to call home is something I am very appreciative of.
This year has not been easy for anyone, but there are still many things to be thankful for.
“We can always find something to be thankful for, no matter what may be the burden of our wants, or the subject of our petitions.” - Albert Barnes
