“Take your medicine and take your truth. This is a part of what growing up is, this is a part of what learning is.” - Will Smith

Tuesday, February 26, the Student Life Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Wom(x)n’s History Month Planning Committee held a Red Table Talk event inspired by the Red Table Talk podcast.

The event consisted of games which sparked conversation on women’s issues. ‘Would You Rather?’ and Jenga included questions like, “Are gender reveal parties offensive?”, “Should women be included in the draft?”, “Did the woman’s march make a difference?” and so on. The event was an enriching way to implement serious thought into the way society looks at women roles.

Hosted by Jada Pickett-Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Smith, the original podcast was created through three generations of women who open up candid conversations between friends and family. This podcast addresses sensitive topics, such as white privilege and prejudice, being black and gay in America, the surviving R. Kelly aftermath and even the Jordyn Woods scandal. One of the main goals of this podcast is to discuss on women’s rights through different perspectives.

It is important to talk about women’s rights, because it opens up discussion on the ever changing social constructs and developing healthier social cues that are all inclusive. There are many questions about how to address issues within the community. Amethyst Marroquin, a member of Student Life, encouraged conversations about identity, no matter how difficult.

We are all going to make mistakes, and recognizing our mistakes is important because it offers a learning opportunity. If you are interested in learning more about various identities and women’s issues, I encourage you to attend events scheduled throughout the month of March by the Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Wom(x)n’s History Month Planning Committee.
