Event to discuss facts, complexities of biological sex
The complexities and descriptions of biological sex will be discussed in an ICE Event Wednesday Oct. 30 at 3 p.m in the SAC Mezz.
Dr. Alexandra Roach, a neuroscientist, will be speaking on this subject.
Along with providing scientific facts, free donuts will also be available at this event.
As a general guideline, Planned Parenthood provides information on biological sex and gender.
Some people call the sex we’re assigned at birth “biological sex.” But this term doesn’t fully capture the complex biological, anatomical, and chromosomal variations that can occur. Having only two options (biological male or biological female) might not describe what’s going on inside a person’s body.
Planned Parenthood also provides information regarding gender and gender identity, acknowledging that biological sex and gender may seem easy to confuse.
“Just remember that biological or assigned sex is about biology, anatomy, and chromosomes. Gender is society’s set of expectations, standards, and characteristics about how men and women are supposed to act.”
According to an email sent out by Student Life, the event will involve a discussion on “…the science behind biological sex and describing, through scientific facts, how biological sex is not as simple as we may think.”
